Denver has voted to become the first US city to allow the use of dope in public venues such as bars and cafes, provided they have a licence.
The new laws – which authorities say could be introduced as early as January – mean private businesses would be able to get permits that allow the use of dope by punters.
The licences, however, would be contingent on backing from local residents and businesses.
“This is a victory for cannabis consumers who, like alcohol consumers, simply want the option to enjoy cannabis in social settings,” local businessman Kayvan Khalatbari, who led the charge, said in a statement published by Reuters.
While the vote results will not be certified until next week, both the for and against campaigns have conceded the vote will definitely pass based on preliminary results.
