By Christian Sculthorp, Founder & Chief Product Tester, VaporizersDirect

10 years ago, if you shopped around for a vaporizer there were only a couple options. You had the choice between a no-name vaporizer that looked like a box (and was probably unsafe to use), or a high-priced volcano that you needed a second job to pay off.

Now in 2018 things have changed. Volcano vaporizers are still awesome (and they went portable), but there’s a lot more competition and heaps of vaporizers to pick from… so many that it can actually be overwhelming to choose.

Should you go with an Arizer Solo 2, Pax 3, Boundless CFX, Sticky Brick Junior, Grasshopper, Xmax V2 Pro, Herbalizer, Dynavap, VapeXhale? That list doesn’t even scratch the surface of what’s available. It feels like you need a PhD in vaporizers to figure it all out.

Well, luckily we’ve put together a flowchart that will help you sort it all out. Just start at the top and work your way down to find the perfect vaporizer for you.

There are a few things you should keep in mind before you get going:

1. All of these vaporizers can handle herb, but not all of them can handle concentrates (oil). If you need one that can handle liquids make sure you pick one in the flowchart.

2. “Vaping through glass” means using a bubbler attachment on the vaporizer. If you’re new, don’t worry about it. If you’re an experience vaper and want to know more… Google it.

3. Portable vaporizers are generally either battery powered or butane powered. Batteries are easier to use but butane gives you the ability to go on long trips without worrying about charging your batteries.

That’s about it. Now go find your perfect vaporizer!

With the Hemp, Health and Innovation Expo (HHI) going down in Brisbane this weekend, we took the chance to talk to one of the exhibiters: Ballin’ On A Budget’s Will Stolk.

Will is a cannabis and media entrepreneur, and a former pro skier, and we’ve been mates with him and the Ballin’ team since the day we launched. He tells us about some big upcoming business in the US cannabis sector:

Dopamine last hooked up with you and Ballin’ On A Budget on 420 this year for the stunt in Martin Place. And it’s been a very big year for you since then. What have been some of your highlights?

I’ve been good dude, just really busy flying back and forth to California, skiing and surfing a bunch, a bit of partying, and some interesting OS trips with some members of the opposite sex. The highlights this year were def our 4/20 stunt with the Craze Co guys, and a trip I did to California in March where we scored good waves and good snow.

Read more about the Who Are We Hurting 2019 420 stunt here.

You’ve been doing some wheeling and dealing over in the States this year – both in the cannabis and media space. What can you tell us?

Yeah, we’ve started a holding company based in California called “Byron Bay Botanicals”, and we’ve invested in a recreational cannabis dispensary at the entrance to Yosemite National Park in a town called Lee Vining. Our dispensary is called Tioga Green Cannabis. We have a fully operational cannabis dispensary, and are working on a manufacturing and distribution facility in nearby Mammoth Lakes – home of the amazing Mammoth Mountain. My partners in that operation are a few good friends who I am skied with for years. We’ve also invested in a new Hemp/CBD Pet company called Inspired Paws that launches in the USA in November.

In terms of the media, we are working on some media projects with “PCET” – the Planet Cannabis Entertainment Network. Planet Cannabis will be the combination of a massive entertainment and news network and a lifestyle shopping experience. The network is unmatched on the web today and they are launching at the end of the year, so we have some really big things planned with these guys. Their platform will be a game changer in the cannabis industry and they are looking to expand into the Australasian market in 2020 so keep your eyes out.

Tigoa Green Cannabis Dispensary

How did you find the cannabis scene in the USA? How does the smoking
culture compare to Australia?

The cannabis scene in the USA, and North America as a whole, is quite
incredible and is lightyears ahead of Australia. Ever since I was a teenager visiting
family over there, I always noticed how much better the weed was and how
everyone had nice glass bongs in their loungerooms that were always clean.
Cannabis felt like more of a lifestyle in the USA, and this has progressed leaps
and bounds since legalisation in certain states.

On the other hand, Australia is quite isolated, being an island in the
middle of the southern Pacific Ocean. The stigma in Australia of the dirty Orchy
bottle bong has set a bad stigma for Australian cannabis users in the public
eye. But this is slowly changing in my opinion. The HHI Expo is one initiative
helping this happen, as well as local gamechangers like the Magical Butter guys,
Glass Prophets in Melbourne, and numerous others.

The industry has progressed fast since cannabis was federally legalised
in 2016, with legal farms popping up all over. I see a great future for the
cannabis plant in Australia, but we are still a long way behind the eight ball.
But kudos where kudos are deserved. There are a lot of hard-working Australians
flying the flag over here, and we’ve seen a lot of progress. The recent news coming
out of the ACT certainly won’t hurt.

Are you excited for the HHI Expo in Brissy this weekend? What can we expect from you and the Ballin’ On A Budget team?

We are super excited for the HHI Expo this weekend! We’ve teamed up with The Craze Co again, and also with our new friends at Glass Prophets. We have two awesome activations, promo girls and some other secret stuff that you’ll have to see for yourselves. Come get a photo taken, grab some stickers and free swag and say hello!

What do you think about the state of cannabis legalisation in Australia?

I personally think Australia is run by a bunch of old backward rightwing
politicians who need to catch up to the rest of the world. It’s the 21st
century. Cannabis is good for the world in so many ways, and I think the
average Joe on the street would agree with me. If there was a plebiscite like there
was for gay marriage, cannabis would almost definitely get legalised in
Australia.

What’s next for Will Stolk? What’s your 2020 going to look like?

Launching brands; Lots of travel, learning and new experiences to be had; and we also have something huge in store for 4/20/2020. Watch this space to see what we get up to with the Craze Co. Thanks again for the opportunity we love DOPAMINE.

If you’re into dabbing and have some big cash to spare right
now, this custom-made Torch Tube from the famous Hitman Glass in LA could be
your thing.

The piece is unique, and was created by Hitman co-founder Dougie
Fresh with one of his classic designs, the Sundae Stack Torch Tube.

It’s currently on sale on Smoke Cartel for US $2,000 (AUD $3,000) – less than half the original US $4,500 Dougie Fresh’s custom pieces usually go for. We’re unsure when Hitman Dougie will have another one available, so get in quick if you’re keen! You can check it out here.

Plus, shipping on Smoke Cartel is free to Australia for orders over $300 (which this definitely is).

The Sundae Stackcontains has five separate chambers and uses
the body of the pipe as one large percolator. The whole rig (excluding the
base) is sandblasted with Hitman logos etched across the base and middle
section. It also contains a sealed-off chamber of butane, plus its own torch within
the glass rig.

If you’re unfamiliar with Dougie Fresh, he (along with Erik
Weissman) is the co-founder of the well-known US brand Hitman Glass. Hitman is
super renowned by dab enthusiasts around the for their appreciation of the art
and their skilled engineering for a good experience.

One of our contributors Arms was lucky to have a go on some
Hitman Glass while over in the US a few years ago. Let us know if you’ve tried
it before, or if you end up buying it, in the comments below!

The good news is that while some care is needed, finding trustworthy sellers isn’t that hard. Producers are well aware that there is a trust issue associated with CBD. That’s why legitimate sellers go through great lengths to prove that their products are safe and effective.

All you need to stay safe as a consumer is a bit of information, and a healthy dose of skepticism. Here’s what you should look for when shopping for CBD online.

1 – Has the product been tested?

The best way to ensure the quality of a CBD product — be it an oil, tincture, or an isolate — is to have each batch tested by a third-party laboratory.

Look around the seller’s page. Do they display certificates that prove that their CBD has been tested? Those certificates are often located in either their home page or the product page for each item on sale. If you can’t find such certificates, that’s a red flag.

2 – Does the shop have a reputation?

Look for the store’s social media profiles, and read customer reviews around the web. If neither exists, that’s a sign that the store is very new, which is another red flag. Scam sites often have no reputation because the owners rebrand every few weeks to dodge customer complaints.

3 – What is the extraction method utilized?

You can’t just stick a needle into hemp and suck the CBD out of it. Extracting cannabinoids out of hemp is a complicated process. If done wrong, it can lead to products that have varying concentrations of CBD, or no CBD at all. Look for companies that extract CBD using supercritical CO2. Powerful solvents like butane and octane can get the job done and are cheaper to use, but these solvents may contaminate the final product.

4 – Where does the hemp come from?

Hemp is very resilient. It’s known to have deep roots and to suck a lot out of the soil around it. Which is great for farmers, since it means the plant can survive in harsh conditions. However, if the soil happens to be contaminated, all those contaminants will be soaked into the plant and stay on its biomass. That’s how heavy metals, pesticides, and funguses end up in hemp, and then in CBD products around the world.

Ideally, the seller you are considering should disclose the source of their hemp. And you should look for stores whose hemp plantations have their soils tested regularly for heavy metals and other contaminants.

5 – Is the price too good to be true?

CBD is expensive to extract, and the market is very competitive. Meaning that if someone is selling their product way cheaper than everyone else, then there’s likely something wrong with it. Not always, of course, but prices that seem too good are definitely a red flag. If you’d like to learn more about this topic, Cibdol’s CBD Encyclopedia has a good guide on CBD oil quality.

By McLean Swanson

May has been observed as the United States’ Mental Health Awareness Month Since 1949, and this year, May marks an important milestone in the fight to raise awareness of pervasive mental afflictions, including depression, stress and anxiety across the country.

The Journal of Affective Disorders’ “A naturalistic examination of the perceived effects of cannabis on negative affect,” published in April 2018 by Elsevier, explored data gathered from the app Strainprint, which allows patients to track changes in their symptoms resulting from dosage and cannabis chemotype differences. The study’s authors found that cannabis significantly reduced stress, anxiety, and depression among participants.

Strainprint analysed and tracked 11,953 sessions in total: 5,085 for anxiety, 3,151 for depression, and 3,717 for stress. Save for the self-selecting nature of their sample and the inability to control for expectancy effects — subjects being aware that they are part of a test and believing they will experience desired outcomes after consuming the drug — the study’s results show a noteworthy reduction in reported symptoms.

The data revealed that medical cannabis users perceived a 58 percent reduction in anxiety and stress and a 50 percent reduction in depression immediately following cannabis use. Two tokes would reduce feelings of anxiety and depression, while more than 10 tokes resulted in the largest perceived reduction in stress.

And as for the cannabis’ content, cannabis that was high in CBD (measured as a percentage of total weight and labelled “rating”), with a rating of 9.5 percent or greater, and low in THC, with a rating of 5.5 percent or lesser, was often associated with the greatest decrease in patients’ perception of depression. Cannabis that was high in CBD, with ratings above 11 percent, and high in THC, with ratings eclipsing 26.5 percent, resulted in the greatest perceived change in stress.

The data showed that baseline symptoms of depression, but not stress or anxiety, were exacerbated by routine cannabis use. The study’s collaborators concluded that while cannabis “reduces perceived symptoms of negative affect in the short-term,” it may aggravate the base symptoms of depression over an extended period of time.

This study isn’t alone in its findings. Scott M. Hyman and Rajita Sinha published work in 2009 in the Journal of Substance Abuse Treatment, published by Elsevier, that found that most users smoke to cope with stress. Lloyd D. Johnston and Patrick M. O’Malley published a study in 1986 in the Journal of Drug Issues, published by Sage Journals, that found that 72 percent of daily cannabis users smoked to relieve tension and relax. Further, Charles W. Webb and Sandra M. Webb published work in 2014 in the Hawaii Journal of Medicine and Public Health, archived in the US National Institutes of Health’s National Library of Medicine, that found that 50 percent of medical marijuana patients who smoked to treat pain reported that the drug provided profound relief from stress and anxiety.

As current legislation stands, only a handful of states, territories, or districts in the US consider anxiety a qualifying condition, while none explicitly recognizes depression. According to the National Institute of Mental Health (NIMH), anxiety disorders affect 19.1 percent of adults in the US, which equates to about 40 million adults between the ages of 18 and 54.

The NIMH estimates that about 16 million adults had at least one major depressive episode in 2012, which equates to 6.9 percent of the population.

And the American Psychological Association reports that at least one-third of all Americans live with extreme stress, while about half of the population, at roughly 48 percent, believes that their stress has increased over the past five years.

According to the APA’s most recent findings, stress levels across the country are through the roof. As stress, anxiety, and depression are closely linked, and finding a marked increase in these three conditions nationwide, researchers continue to examine medical cannabis as a potential solution.

It turns out that Vice Australia’s motion graphics editor Jacob Watts is super into conspiracy theories, and his bosses recently found out that he had a whole website dedicated to his obsession.

…So they gave him his own show (watch below).

As lovers of conspiracy theories ourselves, we hit him up to hear a bit more about what goes on inside his warped mind.

What is the craziest conspiracy theory you’ve ever heard?

It’s a bit of a cliché, but I reckon 9/11 is one of the crazier conspiracy theories. It’s also one of my favourites. I think what makes it so crazy is the weight of the issue itself and the evidence people have found to back it up: mismatched plane wreckage, grounded US Air Force, Tower Seven’s mysterious collapse and all the money in the tower being removed the night before.

People who believe in the theory argue that following the anti-Vietnam war riots, the US needed an excuse to justify invading another country. It’s something that’s altered the last century so heavily that there’s got to be more to it than the original story.

You’ve explored some pretty whacky theories for Vice – including idea Denver Airport is the new Illuminati HQ, and whether or not we live in a computer simulation. Do you believe any of these theories?

Absolutely! Why not!? Why isn’t Denver Airport a massive underground base for the Illuminati? Why aren’t we all just living in a simulation?

The Denver Airport conspiracy does have clearer evidence to support it (see below), so I believe in it a little more so than the simulation theory.

Did Jesus smoke marijuana?

I sadly don’t think he sparked bowls of that sticky-icky. I do believe, however, that he used the cannabis plant for its medicinal benefits – creating an “anointing oil”, which included cannabis to heal those in pain. Jesus had an invention on his hands way ahead of its time.

What first sparked your interest in conspiracy theories?

For me, it was the allure that the world (or reality) that we live in, isn’t as it seems. Like taking the red pill, you can begin to question everything.

There’s also a unique sense of individuality in the world of conspiracies. If someone wants to spend their time on this planet believing the sun is a hologram or that we’re all inside a simulation, then why not? If you’re not hurting anyone with your beliefs, then let people believe what they want. Just be open minded and up for a chat about your “wacky” ideas.

Have you found any common traits in conspiracy theorists you’ve met?

I’m sadly yet to meet a publicly open conspiracy theorist would you believe!

That being said, I’ve noticed a very common trait among most people when talking conspiracies is ending each conversation along the lines of, “I’m not sure why, but it’s real dude. Think about it!” It kind of sums up conspiracy theories altogether really.

A group of local artists have gone and put ‘cannabis plants’ all around Sydney’s streets in a bid to draw attention to the debate around cannabis legalisation on our favourite day of the year, April 20 (aka 420 aka 420blazeit).

While we’re still yet to have all the locations revealed, so far plants have been spotted across the city including in Darling Harbour, Foundation Park, McMahon’s Point Wharf and Martin Place.

A spokesperson for the group – The Craze Co and Ballin’ On A Budget – was able to reveal to us the stunt was part of a big PR push for the upcoming Hemp, Health and Innovation expo. The expo, which is the largest cannabis event in Australia, is going down this May 13 & 14 at Sydney’s Rosehill Gardens. More info here.

Craze Co you may remember from a similar protest last 420, which saw the artists leasing a retail shopfront in King’s Cross and setting up a fake hydro weed grow. Dopamine proudly broke the story at the time, which drew national news attention and got our publisher’s mug on Channel 10.

Craze Co told us regarding this year’s stunt: “The sad fact is everybody knows that cannabis isn’t nearly as bad for people as, say, alcohol or cigarettes. But no-one wants to talk about it because it has such a stigma. We’re just hoping to get people talking.”

Happy 420!
